After an inordinately long wait, File Explorer in Windows 11 finally supports tabbed browsing. This is a macOS idea implemented in 2013. Instead of opening multiple instances of File Explorer, you can open new tabs in a single File Explorer window.
This feature was supposed to roll out shortly after the October 2022 update, but it's been delayed a bit. To use tabs in File Explorer, tap the + button at the top of the File Explorer window. Note that you must be running the latest version of Windows to enable Tabbed File Explorer. (As far as we know, some users are having trouble installing the Windows 11 22H2 update. However, you can manually install this update in a few simple steps.)
Unfortunately tabbed file explorer is not available in Windows 10. If you are still using the Windows 10 operating system, a third party app is required to enable this feature. At the time of writing, Files v2 is the most popular option.
It's worth noting that several years ago Microsoft tried to add tabs to almost every Windows application. However, the idea called "set" was soon abandoned. Let's hope Microsoft keeps File Explorer tabs in Windows 11!
